The good news is that not all of those studios are gone. In fact, one of the newer ones to surface, adapt, and flourish, has been Backbone Studio outside of Loveland, Colorado.  After doing an album project there last summer, I am so reminded of the business ethics and professionalism that I learned to love and respect some twenty years ago when I first began my journey as an engineer and producer. "Having worked in recording studios steadily since the age of 13, I've been in a lot of them in my 21 years as a full time studio musician, artist, producer and engineer.  It's pretty hard to wow me with gear, or with the functionality of a recording studio at this point, especially since I have a well equipped studio of my own in Maine that was built intelligently and ergonomically with good equipment.  But that said, I was knocked over in a very good way by the gear, acoustics, design, atmosphere, view and crew at Backbone Studio, at the mouth of the Big Thompson Canyon near where I used to live in Drake, CO.  It was an uncommonly good experience, very much geared toward creativity and inspiration, and chock full of the sickest gear around, and I'm talking the hardest to come by boutique stuff on the market, and TONS of it.  I intend to bring projects to Backbone based on my first experience there playing piano, B3 and keyboards for Tom Ewing.  In fact I already did...  the day I got back to Maine I called Backbone to schedule some overdubs "remote control" for a project I'm getting ready to mix.  Try to save me some dates, you'll be filling up really fast."
